Currently based in Brooklyn, Certain Creatures is the solo project of Oliver Chapoy, a perpetual knob-twiddler and former member of a number of bands that overlap harsh and beautiful aural areas.. Having cut his teeth in the Floridian hardcore and post rock scenes before jumping ship for more elusive, exploratory sounds, Chapoy doesn’t seem to care much for being locked into any single sonic tag or scene. But to allow a meager amount of context, Certain Creatures makes the sort of noirish, abstract techno of NYC’s post-LIES-breakout world, incorporating more than a modest amount of his prior experience to cultivate a truly singular take on ambient dance music. “Passages,” the lastest single from Certain Creatures’ upcoming double-LP on Styles Upon Styles, a Brooklyn-based imprint that dabbles in a variety of thoughtful, genre-agnostic sounds, emphasizes Chapoy’s approach to more headphone- or soundsystem-centric dance music. Neon-streaked rhythms appear like a slow simmer in the distance, piling on the propulsive dread with eager curiosity. Headstrong low-ends pulse under ground, providing some anonymous pacing for the roiling action high up above. Soon enough, the droning peripherals seep into the foreground, folding melodies into one another and celebrating the resonant tones and blipping inconsistencies. It’s a stark but satisfying trek through inner-space.
Certain Creatures’ Vipassana is out 10.30.15 via Styles Upon Styles.
